Tight Election Race

Reported by Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti is locked in a tight race with two challengers. With about one percent of all precincts reporting, each has about one-third of the vote.

His challengers are Democratic District Attorney James "Buddy" Caldwell and Republican Royal Alexander.

Foti has faced widespread criticism over two unpopular investigations of deaths in a nursing home and hospital in post-Katrina floods.              I

n the Agriculture commissioner's race, Democrat Bob Odom could face his first runoff since 1978. He and Republican state Rep. Mike Strain of Covington each have about 40 percent in a four-man race.

Analysts say Odom faced a tough fight partly because of corruption allegations, partly because of criticism of the way he runs his office.
