Commission on Cancer Accreditation

The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted Three-Year Approval with Commendation to the CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program.

A facility receives a Three-Year Approval with Commendation following the on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a Commendation level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program (cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, community outreach, and quality improvement).  In addition, a facility receives a compliance rating for all other standards.

The Commission on Cancer (CoC) is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care.  Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and 42 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care. There are currently more than 1,400 CoC-approved cancer programs in the United States and Puerto Rico.

The CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program includes a fully accredited cancer treatment facility located in Lake Charles, Louisiana.  The program offers multidisciplinary cancer care, including radiation therapy, cancer surgery, chemotherapy, outpatient treatment, cancer registry, education and support services.  In 2006, CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital became the first healthcare facility in the Southwest Louisiana region to offer Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT).   This highly advanced radiotherapy technology allows physicians at CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital to deliver substantially more cancer-killing energy (generally x-rays) to tumors while decreasing potentially harmful doses to surrounding normal tissues.  "The advances in cancer-fighting technology allow us to offer excellent patient care to the Southwest Louisiana Region," said Shelly Welch, RN, Director of Oncology Services.  "This national accreditation proves that our team is dedicated to delivering advanced cancer care with a compassionate touch."
