Working Louisiana families leave approximately $100 million in federal Earned Income Tax Credit refunds on the table. That can be as much as $4,536 for a family of four.

The state is providing free tax preparation to encourage workers to file. So the Louisiana Department of Social Services teamed up with the departments of Revenue and Labor to open more than 175 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites across Louisiana.

You must earn less than $38,348 a year (married and filing jointly) to qualify. The sites will operate through April 16th.

To find a Volunteer Income Tax Assistant site near you call toll free 1-888-LA-HELP (1-888-524-3578) or go online to ; or and click on "Volunteer Income Tax Assistance."

When you go to the VITA site you should bring a photo ID, Social Security numbers and birthdates for all household members and dependents; wage/earning statements (W-2, W-2g, 1099-MISC, 1099-R); interest/dividend statements (1099 forms); a copy of last year's federal and state returns; if available also bring bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit; total amount paid for day care in 2006 (if applicable) and day-care provider's employer identification number or Social Security number.
