Describe Nature of Initiative:

Student Internship Program

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

KPLC-TV offers internships to college students as a way to assess jobs and job readiness.

These internships are granted to junior and senior students majoring in Communications, Mass Communications, Journalism and Broadcast Journalism from various accredited colleges and universities throughout the U.S. who have received the approval from the Dean/Chairman and/or academic advisor of their respective department(s).  Upon successful completion of the program, the student receives credit and a letter grade. Students were assigned to work with specific News, Sales, Operations and Engineering Department staffers.

Describe Nature of Initiative:  KPLC Teen and Senior Reporters

KPLC Teen Reports air once a month anytime during the month.

and Senior Reports air at 6p on Mondays and again at noon on Tuesdays.                                                                                                                                                               

High school and Senior Citizens report on subjects of interest to their age groups.

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

High School students and Senior Citizens work with an assigned employee to help put together a news story of interest to their age groups.  We have three (3) senior citizens on board reporting on a regular basis (Harriet Green, Flora Roberts and David Soileau.

Describe Nature of Initiative:  KPLC Speakers Bureau

   KPLC managers and employees speak at events sponsored by civic and community organizations and area schools.  Each time a staff member is sent out into the community, it raises the awareness level of broadcasting as a career option, even when that is not the primary theme of the event.

Speaking at schools, organizations and clubs throughout our area (LaGrange High School, Sulphur High, MJ Kaufman Elementary, Moss Bluff Elementary, Barbe High School, R.W. KPLC managers and employees are trained in various aspects of their job.  This training is held on site and off site.

Station personnel were trained in photography, editing, KPLC spot placement and log management; news talent training with Jolene DeVito; ESP Live; Editing and Chyron; Wide Orbit and Lafayette billing; News Computer System and producing; Talent training with Bill Taylor; ENPS; EDIUS news editing system; Storer Information Management System (SIMS); AVID; Preventing Employment Discrimination (on-line training).

Describe Nature of Initiative:  Student Shadow Program

Area high schools offer one day out of the school year whereby students are encouraged to contact area employees so that students can spend one day following an employee or employees around the job.  Students are to choose a field they are interested in pursuing.

Christieona Sutton from FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), a club sponsored by Westlake High School, spent the day at KPLC observing different areas of the television industry.
