Can anything be done to prevent termites?

The best control of termites is prevention and the best time to provide protection against termites is during the planning and construction of a building. J&J Exterminating offers a "Pre-Treat" program to treat the soil and perimeter of the slab with conventional pesticides. The Sentricon Baiting System by Dow AgroSciences is J&J's preferred method of termite elimination. Conventional pesticides and costly fumigation only rids your structure of existing termites. The Sentricon Baiting System eliminates the colony itself.

Here are some termite-prevention tips:

  • Keep your wooden structures dry and well-ventilated.
  • Ventilate all possible subfloor areas and keep vents free of debris.
  • Fix all plumbing leaks; they supply constant moisture.
  • Check all gutters and down spouts to make sure that the water is directed away from your home.
  • Avoid having gardens directly against walls.
  • Make sure the flow over water is directed away from all structures.
  • Do not store wood in contact with the ground.
  • Structural wood in ground contact should be either termite resistant, protected by strip shielding or treated with a preservative.
