3 LSP troopers get Las Vegas trip discipline reduced

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Three Louisiana State troopers who took a controversial side trip to Las Vegas last year had the disciplinary action taken against them significantly reduced Thursday.

The trip was brought to light by an investigative news report by Lee Zurik.

During Thursday’s hearing, the Louisiana State Police Commission restored the ranks and previous pay of troopers Rodney Hyatt and Derrell Williams.

Both men had been demoted because of the trip.

The commission did, however, order Williams to serve a 40-hour suspension and Hyatt to be suspended for 500 hours.

The commission also overturned the letter of reprimand issued to trooper Thurman Miller.

A fourth trooper was also issued a letter of reprimand over the trip but was not involved in Thursday’s hearing.

The troopers, who were heading to a conference in California, went hours out of the way for the overnight stop in Las Vegas.

They insisted that former Louisiana State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson was aware of the trip and authorized it.

However, when Zurik confronted Edmonson about the trip, he denied having any knowledge of it.

Edmonson eventually resigned over that and other scandals to hit his agency.

In appealing their discipline, the three troopers said they believed they were being unfairly punished because of the scandal surrounding Edmonson.

The new head of Louisiana State Police, Col. Kevin Reeves, said Thursday he disagreed with the commission’s actions but respects their decision.
