LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Freezing temperatures in the middle of summer in Louisiana are far from normal...
but the brief exposure to sub-zero temperatures inside a cryo chamber can help people with sore muscles or pain.
"The cryotherapy itself is very very tolerable and it has tremendous benefits for you."
Cryotherapy treatment was originally created in Japan in the 1970's to help treat rheumatoid arthritis.
Its since been found to help with other problems like migraines, skin conditions, and muscle repair.
But according to BeachBody, not only is cryotherapy great for muscle repair but while you're in the chamber your body is working overtime to stay warm. Because it is working so hard, you shed about 800 calories during that three-minute stint. Over repeated use, it could speed up your metabolism.
"Your body kind of reacts to it like it's being attacked... It takes the blood from all the extremities and runs it all back to your core. Your body kind of goes into a crisis mode."
Lake Charles Cryotherapy claims that after this process, athletes have noticeable improvements in energy and recovery.
Locally, an Olympic pole vaulter and a McNeese football player make it part of their routines.
"It helps a lot with inflammation, obviously your muscles after workouts get really swelled and really big and you want to make sure that inflammation goes down."
"There was one day man, we had a hard work out and we had to run the next day. I actually came over here, woke up the next morning and I was feeling like 100% and I'm at workouts early in the morning running sprints, finishing first."
But it isn't just for athletes. Livings says he has had surgeries and injuries that cryotherapy helped him overcome.
"It doesn't matter who you are, you could be a regular person, just knees aching from standing up at work all day, it does it all, it takes care of everything."
This therapy is for all ages and may just help relieve some pain and soreness.
