I'm Sergeant James Anderson with the Louisiana State Police.
The Independence Day holiday is upon us and I would like you to consider this: Drunk driving is illegal driving, yet from 2012 to 2016, 780 people in our country were killed in drunk-driving crashes over Fourth of July holiday periods.
The Louisiana State Police, along with other law enforcement agencies in our area, will be looking for impaired drivers but we need your help.
- Develop a plan to get home safely before traveling to any place where alcohol will be consumed.
- Please don't drive impaired or get in a vehicle with someone else who is impaired.
- Report impaired drivers by dialing *LSP (*577) or 911 from your cell phone.
- Finally, wear your seat belt. It is your best defense in the event of a crash.
Drunk driving can result in fines and jail time and if you kill someone while driving drunk, even though it's not intentional, you can be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
As we celebrate our country's independence, don't lose your independence this Fourth of July holiday.
