McNeese triple jumper John Lemke qualifies for USATF Outdoor Championships

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - John Lemke, McNeese's record holder in the triple jump, will compete at the 2018 USATF Outdoor Championships on Friday, becoming the first Cowboy or Cowgirl track and field athlete to participate at the national championships since 2012.

The Lake Charles native qualified for the meet with his school record jump of 53-feet, 4 ¼-inches that won him the gold medal at this year's Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.

He'll enter the meet ranked 10th in the nation among all Division I competitors, and 13th among the declared triple jumpers that include reigning Olympic Gold Medalist Christian Taylor, and Chris Bernard who competed at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Lemke recently competed at the NCAA East Preliminary Round where he placed 19th overall with a jump of 50-6.75.

The triple jump is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. CT on Friday.

The US Championships is being held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
