Not done yet: LSU defeats Northwestern State in rally fashion

CORVALLIS, OR (WAFB) -

It's been a knock on the LSU baseball team the past two seasons that they don't play well in the midweek games, specifically against schools that call Louisiana home.

Maybe it's because their opponents look at a matchup with the Tigers like their world series, maybe Paul Mainieri hasn't been able to put together a deep enough pitching staff. Whatever it is, when teams from Louisiana square off, they make it more fun than just any other game.

Down 5-4 heading into the top of the ninth inning Sunday against Northwestern State, LSU needed a rally reminiscent of the one they had in Omaha last year in their first game against Florida State. They got it when the Tigers had four hits and five runs in the inning to come back and eliminate the Demons to survive another game in the Corvallis regional of the NCAA tournament.

"Just some real clutch hits," Paul Mainieri said after the game. "Which is what we were lacking earlier in the game."

With runners in scoring position, the Tigers have struggled mightily during the regional. At one point Sunday during the game they were hitting .185 with runners on second and third.

Despite that, they got them when they needed them Sunday. LSU Finished the game with 16 hits.

Cam Sanders, who had a great showing at the SEC tournament, started the game for the Tigers and threw five innings, giving up five hits and three runs.

Matthew Beck came entered the game in relief, throwing three innings and giving up two runs on two hits.

Offensively, Austin Bain was 4-5 and scored two runs.

The Tigers Oregon State, the top seed in the regional, Sunday at 8 p.m. CST. The game will be aired on ESPNU.
