Mother of man murdered at Burns Park speaks about unsolved case 1 year later

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

On March 8 last year Lubbock police responded to a call about a fight at Burns Park on 23rd Street and Avenue L that resulted in the murder of 20-year-old Roy Reed.

Police say 50 to 100 people were at the park that day and shots were fired some point during the fight. Roy Reed was shot that night and was rushed to Covenant Medical Center. He was pronounced dead later that night.

No arrests have been made, but police say this case is still an active investigation.

According to Roy's mother, Mickey Reed, he was a good kid who just found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"He never got into trouble. Roy stayed to himself," Mickey said, "I mean he helped whoever. He was just a good kid, just at the wrong place at the wrong time."

She said it's been a year since her son went to Burns Park to save his cousin from the fight.

"He helped everybody. He didn't care what you needed. He had to come just to help you," Mickey said, "That's just how we raised him."

Roy's willingness to help his cousin took a drastic turn.

"My husband called me and said Roy didn't make it," Mickey said, "It's been real hard because no mother should go through this."

The investigation is still ongoing to find out who murdered Roy Reed one year ago.

"We have not had any arrests in this case, but again, this case is very active as far as our investigators working it, interviewing people, and identifying who was involved," Public Information Officer of LPD Tiffany Taylor said, "This isn't a cold case. This is still very active."

Police ask if you have any information about that night, call Crime Line at 806-741-1000.

Through the rest of the day today expect cloudy and muggy conditions. Winds will continue to gust up to 20 mph through the remainder of the day. Rain chances remain about the same through the rest of the day as those bands of rain from the tropical wave move across the area.  The rain does taper off slightly during the overnight hours but is still a factor come tomorrow.
