The SWLA Genealogical and Historical Library hosted a genealogy open house Tuesday. Locals were invited to come and meet the staff and share any great discoveries that they have made in 2017.
The staff showed residents how to start genealogy research and the resources that are available to the public.
The study of genealogy was rapidly becoming a public interest. In 1973 the Lake Charles Public Library held a genealogy workshop.
The overflow crowd that attended decided to organize a genealogy group. This was the birth of the SWLA Genealogical Society.
The SWLA Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Library now holds a collection size of more than 12,000 items. The library and program is free and always open to the public. For more information, you're asked to call the library at (337) 721-7110.
