METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) -

With the holidays here, many are expecting deliveries. Unfortunately, thieves are out there scoping unattended packages.

When it comes to package theft, any neighborhood can fall victim. A Metairie home was targeted a week ago.

"I was always concerned, but it seemed like it was more towards transcontinental than over this way. Now, it seems like it's coming this way, too, unfortunately," Madeline Lonergan said.

Lonergan found out her neighbor's packages were stolen through their community Facebook page.

"I was home, and of course I wasn't outside to see, but I was really shocked that somebody would just pull up in her driveway, get out, take it and walk away. I can't believe it," Lonergan said.

In the surveillance video, the suspect is seen pulling up the driveway in what police say is a 2013 or 2014 Honda Accord in broad daylight. He grabs the packages and drives off, but backs up to another house across the street 10 seconds later.

The neighbor had no idea the man was in his driveway.

"I think things happen in most neighborhoods, you have to be vigilant. It's a little concerning, but I do believe this is one of the better areas to live," Michael Kraft said.

Metairie isn't the only area, there have been reports in New Orleans and Houma.

The New Orleans Police Department put together some tips to protect packages.

"Have the package delivered to your workplace, or to a family member, friend or neighbor who is home during the day to accept the delivery," Officer Juan Barnes said.

Another tip is requiring a signature on deliveries or providing instructions for hiding packages.

"The best prevention tool to always use is neighborhood watch. Encourage your neighbors to watch for deliveries and agree to secure each others' packages," Barnes said.

The Bridgedale subdivision uses a private Facebook group to communicate with each other.

The people who had their packages stolen said luckily, they weren't of great value.
