COPPERAS COVE, TX (KXXV) -

Local students are doing what they can to help those in need.  This year, Copperas Cove schools collected more than 530 books from students taking part in a special challenge.  Students including Taylor Trimm and Ada Cotner expressed their joy in donating to the cause.

“It makes me feel good because I’m doing the right thing and helping others. I am giving them books to read that they don’t have,” Cotner said.

The challenge called Read3 is issued to local schools in honor of National Literacy Month.  It started back in 2011 and was developed by grocery store chain H-E-B.  Read3 is designed to provide resources for children so they can read at home.  It’s also meant to educate parents and caregivers about the need to read to children at least three times a week.  This is the second year CCISD has participated.

“Although the challenge through H-E-B only lasts a month, CCISD students continue to donate books throughout the school year,” Roseanne Dietze, CCISD library coordinator said.

The challenge was not only designed to collect books but was also meant to express the importance of literacy.
