GATESVILLE, TX (KXXV) -

A Gatesville High School Senior is running for a spot on the Gatesville ISD Board of Trustees.

18-year-old Ryan Coggins is also the school's student council president, a member of the choir and the leader of Shattered Dreams, a program that stresses the dangers of distracted driving.

"Gatesville ISD is a great school district to go to, again I am a product of that," Coggins said.

A product that is looking to remain in the place that made him beyond his high school graduation. This is why Coggins chose to run for one of three spots up for grabs on the Gatesville ISD School Board, a board of seven appointed community members responsible for teacher pay and school curriculum among other things. All things that Coggins said he can't wait to be a part of.

"I enjoy being involved in our community, I enjoy being involved in our school district so I thought what better way to be involved even after I graduate and I thought what better way to do that than to run for school board and hopefully get elected and be able to better help our school district," Coggins said.

Coggins could potentially be the youngest person to ever take a seat on the board, something he says is an asset.

"I think a good thing about still being in school for the four or five months that I would be serving on the school board is that I see what goes on inside G-I-S-D. Decisions that the school board makes you can see directly inside the district so I think their is a bit of inside help there to be able to make decisions," Coggins said.

What's going on in Calcasieu Parish schools?  That was the question those in the community wanted to find out at Monday night's NAACP forum.  Superintendent Karl Bruchhaus broke down these three topics-- school accountability, current initiatives, and continuing challenges--  first before questions were asked.  Everything from retaining more certified teachers, to bond issues, and even questions on safety were asked.  But while every concern couldn't ...
