LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Southwest Louisiana residents all know what happens when there is a long period of heavy rain, but Wednesday night,  the Lake Charles City Council discussed a possible solution to reduce the flooding impact.

"Detention is the way to go for this," said Calcasieu Parish Administrator, Bryan Beam.

The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury is working to create a retention pond that would work off the Contraband Bayou at Louisiana Avenue and McNeese Street to help with drainage problems, but before that can happen, it need help from city council to acquire the land.

"What is being asked is a 25 percent share from the city for the purchase," said Beam. That's close to $350,000.

But that request didn't come without some concerns.

"It leaves me kind of in a corner, because how do I answer people that I serve whose streets flood," said Council Member Luvertha August.

"District F is already limited on its expansion space for potential businesses to locate in order to expand our economic development," said one resident.

After an hour and a half of discussing concerns the council voted five-to-one in favor to help pay for the land, but not without a final caution from one city council member.

"Take your time," said August. "Because by the time you want to start the retention pond...you might come back and ask us for more money, and I don't think we'd be ready for that."

Gravity Drainage District Number Four has already approved to pay 25 percent for the land, while the police jury has approved to pay the other 50 percent.
