MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

It's always a relief to find out that the noises in your house are not being made by a home intruder looking to burglarize your home. Finding out that it's actually an alligator, however, doesn't do much to calm the nerves.

That's just what Laura Polston was faced with Sunday morning as a nine-foot alligator found its way up fifteen feet worth of stairs and onto her back porch.

"It started with me waking up at 2 a.m. to a bunch of movement from what sounded like someone forcing entry," Polston stated. " I assumed it was my mother doing housework at odd hours until she called me from downstairs asking what noise I was making and why."

Unsure of its intentions inside her home, Polston tapped on the glass door leading onto the back porch. According to her, the alligator seemed docile, so she was content on calling the police and waiting for them.

When Polston called the police, she was told that they could not help her so she then contacted the department of natural resources.

A man responded to the scene at around 4:45 a.m. and he said that this was the strangest thing he had ever seen in his fifteen years of working for the Department of Natural Resources.

The alligator got very aggressive when they tried to remove him from the back porch, thrashing about and breaking Polton's furniture.

After several hours of struggling, the Department of Natural Resources shot and killed the alligator.
