BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The debate about taxes got underway at the capitol Tuesday for the second day of the regular legislative session.

Lawmakers focused on possible changes to the individual income tax. Governor John Bel Edwards is calling for increased taxes on upper income earners and businesses in exchange for lower tax rates for about 90 percent of Louisianans. Some ideas discussed Tuesday would change tax brackets and eliminate certain tax exemptions.

“I don't care if David Vitter won governor, if it was JBE, or whoever it may be, it’s our responsibility and our promise to the people to do tax reform,” said Rep. Kenny Havard, R-Jackson

Discussions on the matter will continue Wednesday with lawmakers set to examine ideas changing how much businesses pay in income tax. No votes are expected this week as lawmakers sort through more than 140 tax-related bills.
