ODESSA, TX (KWES) -

Some Odessa Police officers were in class Wednesday, and the topic they learned was “Canine Encounters.” The lesson learned was how they can use other methods to DE-escalate a situation when there is an aggressive dog involved.

Joe Barreraz, Field Operations Manager for the Animal Control Division with the Odessa Police Department said, “A lot of these calls they will go on a majority of these households do have pets.”

How many pets? The Humane Society of the United States and the American Pet Products Association both say there are close to 55 million homes with a dog that already has another pet. Barreraz added when police go into these homes the dog might not be aware of the situation.

“We are there to assist and provide a service call but yet the animal doesn’t relay it that way or interpret it that way,” said Barreraz.

Some other ways officers were taught to handle an aggressive dog instead of shooting them were:  ASP baton, OC spray or even a Taser.

Corporal Steve LeSueur of the Odessa Police Department said, “It’s helping us to recognize different types of situations, whether it’s animal cruelty or any other type of situation where a crime is being committed.”

After the hours’ worth of information given to the police officers, Barreraz hoped it will help them make the right decisions when they are on the job.
