LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

More than 1,000 newly donated coats are now in the hands of those who need them, thanks to a civic club's project. Just in time for the cold weather, the Kiwanis Club of Lake Charles is making its first delivery of warm coats to those who can't afford one. The Coats for Kids program asks for donations from schools in the fall.

This is the 29th year," said Kiwanis Club member Steve Ek. "We average about a thousand coats a year. So times 29, about 29,000 thousand coats. This year, we collected 1,050 coats, distributed to eight different agencies."

Abraham's Tent director Pearl Cole says the coats are much needed.

"As soon as the weather starts getting cooler, well of course people start looking for coats," said Cole. "So this answers the problem right here. This takes care of all of them."

"This was given to you by someone you don't know and I don't know, but they wanted you to stay warm," Ek told one man.

Robert Guilott with Triple A Cleaners offers to clean the donated coats each year.,

"We've been asked by the Kiwanis Club to help and over the years we've taken it on."

Coats collected in the Kiwanis program were given to eight different agencies who handed them out to those in need. They were given to both children and adults.
