Little Troopers helps veterans and their children

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Joshua and Melissa Macer are military veterans trying to get their lives back together after giving years of service to their country.  Joshua served four tours of duty to Iraq and Afghanistan and Melissa was in military intelligence.

"I've seen a lot of combat and I was in that mode for ten years of my life to basically fight or flight. So that was a real challenge for me personally when I came back. Trying to ease back into a normal lifestyle," said Joshua.

"There's also the residual effects that war brings," said Melissa. "It's really hard for them to come out of a place where everybody is out to destroy them basically. Anyone you might meet walking around. Then they come back here and nobody does that."

The Macers and their daughter Evangeline represent what the group Little Troopers is all about. They help purchase Christmas presents for children of military families.

"Oh, it's a tear jerker," said volunteer Mark Soileau. "To see those kids. Some of them, the parents are not there or their parents just came in. Some are looking for jobs, with the economy like it is. Just give them a better Christmas. Appreciation, not charity, it's appreciation."

"It's so humbling when somebody comes up to you and says they appreciate your service," said Josh. "We want to help you and your family. They have no idea who we are. It's just amazing there are people like that, especially here in southwest Louisiana."

To help fund this year's effort, Little Troopers is holding a fundraiser at the West Cal Events Center this weekend that will include live music, gumbo and other family friendly activities. It'll be held at from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2016.

It's unfortunately more common than you would think: pet owners dropping their animals off at the vet and never picking them up. Most offices cannot take in these animals, so they just end up at the shelter.

A few showers possible Monday for the eclipseA few showers possible Monday for the eclipse

Overnight, we will have clouds clear and will become mostly clear. Temperatures will slowly fall to the mid 70s. It will feel very warm due to the humidity. Heat indices will be in the 80s, throughout the night. Monday, the day of the eclipse, there is just a 30% chance of rain, so we will most likely have a few clouds during the time of the eclipse. There could be a few showers around the peak of the eclipse, but more likely, at least some clouds.
