VERNON PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

Vernon authorities are currently investigating a shooting that took place near Churchman Road in Rosepine on Monday, authorities said.

At approximately 4:06 p.m., Vernon Parish sheriff's deputies responded to a claim that a person had been shot in the leg, said Sheriff Sam Craft.

When deputies arrived at the residence, they found James David Hickman, 46, of Rosepine, injured. Hickman told deputies that Jared Heath Woofter, 27, also of Rosepine, had shot him in the leg. Hickman was transported to a hospital in Rapides parish and was later released.

Later, deputies found Woofter in the area of La. 1146, Craft said. At that time, Woofer was questioned and then released after he told deputies he acted in self-defense.

The investigation is ongoing.
