Southland baseball tournament extended in Sugar Land through 2019

FRISCO, TEXAS - The Southland Conference and the Sugar Land Skeeters have agreed to a three-year contract that will extend league's 2017-19 baseball tournaments to Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas, the Southland and the professional team announced Wednesday.

Constellation Field, home of the Skeeters, an Atlantic League minor league team, has been the site for the Southland Tournament in 2013 and 2015 and will serve as host in 2016. The 7,500-seat stadium opened prior to the start of the 2012 baseball season also has the ability to host football, soccer, lacrosse and concerts.

"We are very excited to keep the Southland Conference Baseball Tournament at Constellation Field, a first-class and fan-friendly baseball venue for our teams and their fans," Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett said. "Our coaches and student-athletes have had a great time in the facility in recent years, and we look forward to making more great postseason memories during the next three years. We also appreciate everyone in the Skeeters organization, as well as other Sugar Land officials, who worked diligently to make this agreement happen."

The dates for the tournaments are May 24-27, 2017; May 23-26, 2018; May 22-25, 2019.

"We have truly enjoyed working with the Southland Conference and hosting the tournament and we are very excited to be part of the conference postseason tournament for the next three years," Skeeters President Jay Miller said.  "Constellation Field is a perfect setting for this very competitive tournament showcasing the colleges and the student-athletes at these Division I institutions.  Fans of the colleges and the Skeeters will be entertained and enjoy the conference tournament experience."

The 2016 Southland Conference Tournament will be May 25-28 at Constellation Field.

For the second consecutive season, every game of the Southland Conference Baseball Tournament will be carried live by ESPN3.  Southland baseball began in 1964 but the league did not conduct a centralized postseason tournament from 1969 to 1992.

The event is set up with two double-elimination brackets with the winners meeting in a single game for the tournament championship. The winner of the Southland tournament is the league's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.
