It’s been a long wait, but after two bleak Decembers on Mt. Hood, the snow is finally starting to pile up on the mountain for the first time in three years.

There’s a base of about 7 feet (80”) at an elevation of 1,500 feet above Government Camp.  At the same spot last year, there was 2 feet (25”).  In 2013, there was 24".

A spokesperson for Mt. Hood Meadows tells Fox 12 the resort has gotten 194 inches since the lifts started running in November.  In comparison, it received 195” of snow the entire season last year.

On Twitter, Timberline Lodge posted a picture of a car buried in snow with the caption: “five feet of snow in four days.”

“There’s snow this year and last year there really wasn’t,” Mike Dimezza of Portland told Fox 12.  “Yesterday, it snowed even in town in Portland and that made us think if it’s snowing in Portland it must be dumping in the mountain, so let’s get up there while the conditions are good.”

Dimezza and his children Luca, 9, and Maggie, 6, spent Monday afternoon tubing down the snow-covered hill at Skibowl.

At that elevation, there’s a base of about 50” of snow.  On December 28th, 2014, there was less than a third of that total: 16”.

“We played in the parking lot because there’s a lot of snow there, too, and then we came up and tubed for a while,” Luca Dimezza added.  “It was very fun.”

“It was awesome,” 8-year-old Zoey Nadzieja of Vancouver said of her experience cosmic tubing with her family at Skibowl.  “It goes really fast and it was just like exploding, it was awesome.”

“[Our son] is very upset now, as you can see, because it’s time to go home,” Dima Yaremenko said of his 3-year-old son, Max.

For the first time in a while, the snow totals so far this season are right on track for a normal or above-normal winter on Mt. Hood.

And winter is just getting started.
