NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

Louisiana same-sex couples can now change their driver’s license to display their married name.

Officials with the Office of Motor Vehicles said they have upgraded their system to accommodate same-sex couples wishing to change their name. Same-sex couples can apply for changes on Monday.

State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson said computers had to be re-programmed to allow changes a man’s last name.

Couples wishing to change their name must bring a certified marriage license plus social security records.

The cost is $13 for a four-year license or $17 for the new six-year license.

Louisiana had been putting off any name changes on driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations for same-sex couples. Many applied to have their name changed at the Office of Motor Vehicles following the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court recognizing same-sex marriage on June 26. The couples were turned away.
