LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Former Hathaway High and McNeese State standout Jarrett LeBlanc made history Saturday when he broke the four-minute mile mark at the Cowboy Elite Mile event.
LeBlanc finished the race in 3 minutes, 59.95 seconds and the time was verified by Bayou South Timing LLC.
LeBlanc is the first Louisiana native to run a sub four-minute mile on Louisiana soil and only the 18th person to do it this year.
"I thank God and thank all of you Cajuns for coming out tonight," said LeBlanc who currently runs for Team Green Running Club. "That was out of this world. A phenomenal experience. This was one of the best races of my life ever."
Sir Roger Bannister was the first person to break the four-minute mark when he finish a race in 3:59.4 on May 6, 1954.
According to McNeese State Sports Information Director Matthew Bonnette, LeBlanc's pace was eerily similar to that of Bannister's trek.
Bonnette said LeBlanc finished the first 400 meters in 58 seconds and was at 1:59 at the halfway point.
"LeBlanc put it in another gear around the 1,400-meter mark and made a turn on the final stretch at 3:40," Bonnette said in a news release.
LeBlanc is training for spot on the U.S. Olympic marathon team. The Olympic Teams Trials are set for Feb. 13, 2016 in Los Angeles.
The world record for the mile run is 3:43.13, which was set by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj in July 1999.
