Calcasieu cities to participate in walking challenge

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA (KPLC) - Calcasieu Parish communities will strap on their tennis shoes this May for the

initiative.

The project is a collaborative effort by local businesses, organizations and individuals to fight obesity in the region. It focuses on creating environments that encourage physical activity, providing access to healthier foods, educating the public on ways to stay fit and pushing for government health policy changes.

Dare to be Healthy will host a series of

events in May. All events will start at 9 a.m., with dates as follows: May 2 at the Manegan Center in Westlake, May 9 at Heritage Square in Sulphur, May 16 at the Lake Charles Civic Center and at Iowa City Park, and May 23 at Vinton High School.

The project began in 2012 and is funded by a three-year grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation.
