DEQUINCY, LA (KPLC) - Mardi Gras is long gone, but the Autism Society of Southwest Louisiana is already preparing for next year, and area Cub Scouts lent a hand.

Cub Scout Packs 1, 72, 75, 82, 84, 86, 88 and 107 spent their Cub/Dad Weekend at Camp Edgewood near DeQuincy, sorting and packaging more than 17,000 used Mardi Gras beads.

Pack 84 from Sulphur sorted the most, coming in at 7,632 beads. To see more photos of the event, click

The Autism Society collects the beads after the Carnival season and recycles them for sale the next year. It's one of their biggest fundraisers.
