Remembering 9/11 across Southwest Louisiana

Good Thursday morning to you!  Britney Glaser here with a look at what's in store on today's Sunrise:

*Residents across Southwest Louisiana are invited to commemorate 9/11 at the Lake Charles Civic Center this morning.  Veterans and Lake Area residents are invited to gather at the 9/11 Memorial and we'll tell you what time everything gets underway today.

*Sheriff's deputies in Allen Parish continue their search for an Oakdale man wanted for the beating death of an Elton man.  We'll share the profile of 30-year-old Shane Deshotel, who will face a second degree murder charge when he is taken into custody.

*Class continues as usual this morning at Ralph Wilson Elementary in Lake Charles.  A bullet was found on the school's grounds Wednesday, leading to a lockdown at the school.  Hear what the Calcasieu Parish School Board is saying about the incident.

*The American Red Cross is providing food, shelter and baby items to a Lake Charles family after an early morning fire displaces them.  We'll tell you where it happened and what we know about the cause.

*There's a new type of gumbo in Southeast Texas, but it's not your favorite creole cuisine.  It's a slang name for the latest drug combination including ecstasy, synthetic marijuana, cocaine and PCP.  Find out the dangerous effects law enforcement are seeing.

Make it a Sunrise day!

We are in the middle of August, and therefore the dog days of summer. That means hot temperatures in the afternoon. For the next few days, afternoon temperatures will be at least 91 degrees. Heat indices could reach up to 110 degrees. That is reaching dangerous levels, especially when spending an extended time outdoors.  After just a few minutes being outside and exposed in the sun, or even in the shade, the heat can cause illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
