La. medicaid makes changes on coverage for early C-sections, induced pregnancies

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The Louisiana Medicaid is teaming up with a major insurance company in order to protect mothers and their infants.

The duo is now refusing to pay for early C-sections or induced deliveries unless a doctor says it is medically essential. Due to the dangers to infants, Louisiana Medicaid began refusing  to cover early deliveries back in July.

"Babies aren't fully developed until 39 weeks, and we're really encouraging women to go the full 40," said Medicaid medical director Dr. Rebekah Gee.

A full-term pregnancy is 39 or 40 weeks. But, doctors are encouraging women to wait until the baby is ready to be delivered on its own, even it takes longer than 40 weeks.
