CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) - The first hands-free cell phone zone signs went up at St. John Elementary this morning.

The state recently passed a law stating it's illegal to use a handheld cell phone in a school zone during posted hours, but it's up to the district to get the signs up.

The school board recently announced they would ask the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury for help with the signs.

Police jury officials helped put up the first signs at St. John. They said they will put signs up at seven more schools on parish roads in the next few weeks.

School board leaders said local municipalities will also help put signs up at other schools.
