Rams aim to make VSU series more of a rivalry

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany State head coach Mike White won't exactly call the Golden Rams relationship with Valdosta State a rivalry, considering ASU has only beaten the Blazers once in school history.

ASU can begin to try to even the series this Saturday at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

White says it may not be a rivalry yet, but it is an important contest for both teams. It is a regional contest, and both teams battle for south Georgia recruits on a yearly basis.

On Saturday night, it will all come down to which team plays better and White knows his Rams are in for a test.

"Defensively, we're going to have to keep them from getting out of the gate. They're such a quick starting team," White says. "You're going to have to finish that game off also, because they're going to play hard for four quarters."

White believes the Golden Rams' offense will need to keep up with the Blazers, who scored less then 30 points only twice last season.

The good news for ASU is they have plenty of starters returning on an offense that got into a groove late last season.

"Valdosta's going to be a pretty good team," says senior QB Frank Rivers. "We've got to score points. It's going to be a tough one."

Albany State kicks off against Valdosta State Saturday night at 7:00 in Valdosta.
