VINTON, LA (KPLC) -

One person was killed Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 10 eastbound near the Texas-Louisiana border, state police said.

The crash happened at 8:10 a.m. and closed I-10 eastbound until 11 a.m., when the outside lane was cleared. Traffic remained heavy until 3:10 p.m. when the other lane was reopened.

According to a preliminary investigation by state police, an 18-wheeler driven by 25-year-old Adrian T. Desmeuchet of Stafford, Texas, was struck from behind.

The vehicle that struck the 18-wheeler was a large van. It was heavily damaged and caught on fire. The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Desmeuchet was not injured.

Routine toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and the crash remains under investigation.

"While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, inattentive and distracted driving continues to be a factor in many of the crashes that occur in our state," said Sgt. James Anderson, spokesman for Troop D.

Anderson ssaid TroopD has investigated nine fatal crashes resulting in nine deaths this year.
