LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

A Lake Charles business owner targeted by thieves is taking matters into his own hands, after the Calcasieu Sheriff's Office refused to respond to an overnight burglary.

"I get broke into about once a week for scrap iron," said Pat Bennett, owner of Bennett's Machine Shop & Engine Repair.

Bennett said his business near Chennault was hit Tuesday night. The thieves took several motors and left one behind in the middle of the street.

"When I discovered the motor in the street. I called the Sheriff's Office, and they said they would not come out here," Bennett said. "I'm fed up with it. I don't know what we get for our money."

Bennett said about an hour later, the thieves returned to the scene of the crime in an older model red, long wheel base Chevy pickup truck with no tailgate.

"These two guys get out. Both of them has one end of the engine. They get it up to the truck and I pull out the bazooka. I said, 'This is over - drop the motor. Drop it now!' They put the motor down and say, 'We are going to call 911. You can't pull that on us.' I say, 'Get them out here please, because I couldn't get them out here.'"

Bennett said he was not able to get a license plate number. Despite another call to the Sheriff's Office, deputies once again refused to respond. Chief Deputy Stitch Guillory said ongoing issues with Bennett prompted the Sheriff's Office to not respond.

"We've sent deputies out there responding to Mr. Bennett's call for help," Guillory said. "Once our deputies get out there he's cursed at them. He's kicked them off his property. He has refused to talk to female deputies. He's called up here and cursed out our supervisors on the phone.

"We will not respond to that type of behavior. We have referred him to Lake Charles Police. We don't have a problem responding if he's respectful of our deputies."

Bennett admits his frustrations may have got the best of him.

"I would like to see law enforcement not get a little offended when I talk to them a little bit rough, because I'm getting a little antsy here," Bennett said. "Don't be so soft-skinned. Come out here and do something. This is in the middle of no man's land. It's frustrating. I would like to see more patrols overnight here. I've lost thousands of dollars in stolen equipment over the years."

While he may have burned a bridge, Bennett is now warning other would-be thieves.

"I now have a lethal security system. I'm letting you know - enter this property again at your own peril. I'm going to be in fear of my life. You know what that means. Do it again. Lethal," Bennett said.

UPDATE: CPSO Responds To Complaint

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office responded to Mr. Bennett's complaint on Thursday, one day after the story ran on KPLC.

Sheriff Tony Mancuso said Chief Deputy Guillory went back to Bennett's on Thursday and talked things over with the business owner.

" I think Mr. Bennett handled it wrong and I think we could've done a much better job and handled it differently," Mancuso said. "I think with Chief Guillory going there this morning, I think hopefully we've resolved this.

"Let me tell you, let me assure every citizen, we're gonna come out and try to handle anybody's problem, anytime there's an issue, no matter what the situation is.
