IBERVILLE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge television personality Scott Rogers was shot and killed inside his home in St. Gabriel, La. Wednesday afternoon. Investigators say they believe his son-in-law shot and killed Rogers and then turned the gun on himself, but survived.

The alleged gunman, identified as 36-year-old Mathew Hodgkinson, was rushed to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. Hodgkinson was also a producer of Around Town, a show Rogers hosted that airs on Saturday and Sunday mornings on WAFB-TV.

"We have detectives at the hospital," says Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi.  "Hodgkinson is still alive. He's on a ventilator and he's sedated, but he's still alive at this time."

Deputies were called to the scene on Daisy Avenue at 12:40 p.m.

"We received a call that shots were heard as somebody was entering the residence," the Sheriff said. "On follow up, it was described as a murder-suicide scene and we're investigating it as a homicide until it's determined what we have here."

"It was determined that Scott Rogers was deceased and another male at the residence had received a shot to the head and was in critical condition," said Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi.

Hodgkinson is married to Roger's daughter, Stassi said. The sheriff said the home had been the scene of a "bunch of stress" in the past several weeks and had previously responded to calls at the home.

"It's been topsy-turvy at this residence. We responded to a couple of calls. It's been a high stress environment for this family and looks like it culminated in this," the Sheriff said.

Stassi says an autopsy will be done Thursday. Prosecutor Tony Clayton said the case is under investigation.

"This is an open case," Clayton says. "We'll follow the evidence and there's a lot of it. So there's a lot of work needs to be done. That's what we're here for and we're plan on getting to the bottom line."

The Around Town show aired weekend mornings on WAFB-TV but was produced by another company. Hodgkinson, the show's producer, left a voicemail message for WAFB Tuesday to say that the show was being canceled. "Scott is facing a family catastrophe," he said. "We don't know what's going on or why at this point but I have made the decision to cancel future shows. I hope you can keep us in your prayers as we move forward."

Rogers' attorney, Seth Dornier, who had been handling what he called a 'private legal matter' for him, says he received a text message telling him to come to Rogers' residence.

"It's very unfortunate," said Dornier. "Scott Rogers was a great man. He was kind, honest, truthful, a great father and a great leader. At this time, I think everybody is just shocked and deeply saddened."

Rogers' attorney confirms that the television personality was in the midst of a legal battle but would not provide specifics. Sources confirmed that Rogers' daughter was testifying before a federal grand jury Wednesday in matters related to her father. Deputies were sent to the courthouse to notify her of the death.

U.S. Attorney Walt Green said Department of Justice guidelines prevent him from speaking about grand jury matters and he could not confirm or deny that any proceedings were taking place.

Workers at the Around Town studios located inside Cortana Mall say they were instructed not to speak about the case or the future of the studio.
