Report: About 1,000 unaccompanied illegal immigrant children live in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Gov. Bobby Jindal wants to put a stop to illegal immigrants coming into Louisiana.

The US Department of Health and Human Services said some of the children, mostly from Central America, were placed with sponsors in Louisiana while they await immigration proceedings.

About 1,000 unaccompanied immigrant children are living in the state.

According to a report, 173 of them are living in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Jefferson Parish has the most with 533 and Orleans Parish is second with 237.

    A few weeks ago, the Welsh town council voted on the $15,000 dollar raise for Police Chief Marcus Crochet, but deadlocked, meaning no pay increase. The council will hold a public meeting August 1 to again discuss raising the police chief's salary from $40,000 a year to $55,000 a year.

    A new veterans memorial is in the works for the town of DeQuincy.

    It will be a replication of "Raising the Flag" in Japan during World War II, and will honor area veterans like the Clifton brothers, who returned to their hometown of DeQuincy after serving in the war.
