Lafayette, LA (KPLC) - The roommate of a Lafayette caretaker is charged with child desertion, following a Tuesday morning incident on Foreman Drive.

Lafayette Police responded to the 400 block of Foreman at about 9 a.m. regarding a two-year-old child that had been located. The child's father was contacted, and he told officials that he had dropped the child off that morning at a caretaker's home off of Sunny Lane.

The father had left the child in the custody of the caretaker's roommate, who Lafayette Police say later left for work without confirming whether the caretaker was awake and aware of the child.

"The child was able to open the door, leave the residence and travel to the 400 block of Foreman Drive," said Lafayette Police in a statement.

The roommate, identified as Jenica Brooks of Lafayette, was arrested and charged with child desertion.

The child was not injured and was returned to her father.
