WELSH, LA (KPLC) -

I-10 remains closed from mile marker 59 to 44 through Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning after a tanker carrying hazardous materials crashed into the median.

Sergeant James Anderson said crews will be working to to get I-10 clear in that area through the as soon as possible.

"The reason that that much roadway is closed down is that that's where the major arteries are available to us as a detour, so we're trying to inconvenience the public as little as possible by doing that," Anderson said.

The Welsh Police Department is investigating the crash. There is no known cause for the crash. The driver has been hospitalized and his condition is unknown.

State Police is tasked with getting the hazardous material out of the median. The tanker was transporting Trichloroethane, which can cause central nervous system damage, and is a suspected cancer hazard.

"It's an inhalation hazard, in sufficient quantities it can cause death," Anderson said.

Crews will work in hazmat suits on a process called remediation, removing grass affected by the spill.

"The Department of Environmental Quality will conduct an assessment, and we'll be able to make a determination as to when we'll be able to reopen. Obviously we want to reopen the road as soon as possible but we have to make sure we do it in a safe and prudent manner," Anderson said.
