Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter to lead Gamecocks chant on Thursday night

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Medal of Honor recipient and retired Marine Cpl. Kyle Carpenter will lead the cheer during the South Carolina Gamecocks' home opener against Texas A&M on Thursday.

Carpenter, 24, will appear before the sold out crowd and get them ready for the game with the standard "Game-Cocks" chant.

Carpenter joins the ranks of other well-known South Carolinians who have started the chant such as Hootie and the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker and South Carolina baseball coach Chad Holbrook.

The Medal of Honor was given to Carpenter in June 2014 following a Nov. 21, 2010 incident in the Helmland Province of Afghanistan where he jumped on a grenade for a fellow Marine.

Since then, Carpenter has almost recovered from the blast and traveled around the country to share his story.

Some wonder if he had any anxiety during his acceptance of the honor, but according to Carpenter, his appearance on Thursday night trumps anything.

"Out of all the stuff I've been fortunate enough to do, this is the only thing I've been nervous about," Carpenter said in an interview with GamecocksOnline.com.
