New EPA ozone rules could affect SWLA economy

Senator David Vitter and other politicians went to Lake Charles to discuss how new EPA rules could harm Southwest Louisiana's economy.

Ground-level ozone is linked to respiratory problems and the EPA is expected to announce tough new rules later this year which would significantly lower industrial ozone emission levels..

Senator Vitter said, "I'm real concerned that this new standard would be little to no environmental gain, big big economic loss, big negative job impact."

If the new rules are approved, industry leaders say few, if any, Louisiana parishes would meet the new standards, and would be designated as non-attainment.

Congressman Bill Cassidy said, "Here we have industry which has the potential to create great jobs great benefits for families who are struggling, and EPA comes in with a regulation of unproven value that threatens to squash those jobs."

EPA is required under a court ordered deadline to propose the revised standard in december, likely reducing the current standard to a range within 70 to 60 parts per billion.

Congressman Charles Boustany said, "It raises the cost significantly for these projects. It could cause some of these companies to rethink their investment. It certainly will have a direct impact on the job growth in this community."
