SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA (KPLC) - An official on Thursday said Lake Charles could get a VA clinic as early as summer 2015.

Rep. Charles Boustany, (R-South Louisiana), said he has received confirmation the Department of Veterans’ Affairs has set a timeline for the awarding of leases and the completion of construction for clinics in Lafayette and Lake Charles. Legislation authorizing the two clinics was signed into law earlier this year.

An official with the Department of Veterans' Affairs said leases could be awarded by February and the Lake Charles clinic could be completed six months after that. The Lafayette clinic could be completed by late 2015 or early 2016.

“Finally, South Louisiana veterans have a deadline they can look forward to on the construction of these important clinics," Boustany said Thursday in a news release. "This is another step forward in the march toward the completion of these facilities that will provide the standard of care our veterans deserve. I will hold the VA fully accountable to their deadline, because our veterans have waited long enough for the completion of this process. It’s time to put shovel to dirt and finally get this done."

Melissa Gregory spends her sunny days outdoors feeding ducks near the Lake Charles Veterans Memorial Park. "It's perfect conditions," said Gregory about the sunny day because it helps her relax and get rid of stress, but lately with all the rain she's been feeling stressed. "I feel kind of cooped up and I feel like I can't go outside, and I have to hide under the roof or stay in the house or hide under the umbrella," she said.
