Red Cross helps 21 after Iowa apartment fire

IOWA, LA (KPLC) - The American Red Cross responded late Wednesday morning to help residents after an Iowa apartment fire destroyed an eight-unit building.

Based on each family's disaster-related needs, the Red Cross volunteers have provided food, clothing, shelter, supplies and other resources to the seven families, including 21 people.

“Our hearts go out to the families affected today by this devastating fire,” said Brian Burton, a disaster responder for the Southwest Louisiana Chapter. “When tragedy like this occurs, it reminds us the importance of working smoke alarms and family evacuation plans that all household members know.”

Red Cross volunteers at the scene of the fire also supported the multi-agency response with cold drinks and snacks.

Community members also have been stepping up with support. To help people affected by disasters big and small, you can donate via 478-5122,, or through the mail at the Southwest Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross in Lake Charles.
