LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Embattled Sulphur businessman Joe Palermo may be facing more legal troubles.

State police on Wednesday executed search warrants at two Palermo business -- a real estate office on Maplewood Drive in Sulphur and LP Gaming on Ryan Street in Lake Charles.

Investigators from the state Attorney General's Office were there with authorities conducting searches of the businesses.

Calcasieu Parish Assistant District Attorney Hugo Holland was at the Sulphur business helping to provide legal advice to police.

"State police and the Louisiana Attorney General are executing two search warrants in Calcasieu Parish today in relation to an investigation that's been ongoing for several years in relation to businesses located here at this address," Hugo said.

Palermo has already pleaded not guilty to charges he possessed stolen heavy equipment and attempted to cover it up.

Palermo and his attorneys are due in court Thursday in that case.

Palermo's attorneys said he is innocent and accused authorities of harassing Palermo and trying to publicly embarrass him.
