IOWA, LA (KPLC) -

Multiple agencies responded to a fatal fire Wednesday morning at an apartment complex in the 500 block of South Thomson Avenue in Iowa. Friends, family and residents filled up the streets as they watched several units up in flames.

"If we don't get it contained, we can get part of the town burned down," said witness Margie Habetz, who's stepdaughter lived in the apartment complex, known as the old Harper Apartments. "It's a big fire, it's one of the biggest I'd ever seen."

Iowa Fire Chief Sandy Miller confirmed one person died but said several other complex residents were rescued. Authorities did not identify the victim but family members said the woman was 65-year-old Alice Seward. Her granddaughter, Ashley Jackson, was inside the apartment with Seward along with her 9-month-old sister and recalls the incident as a blur.

"I just wanted to save my little sister and grandmother," said an emotional Jackson. "That was the only thing that was going through my mind, and I couldn't get to my grandmother. I just wish I could have my grandmother back and tell her one last thing."

Family members say Seward was sick a few months ago and suffered some mobility issues as a result. The family calls the incident tragic and says being there for each other along with Seward's daughters is their first priority.

"She's just extremely distraught right now and it's to be expected," said family member Kendra Mazyck. "Something tragic like that, no one was expecting it. We had a good grandmother, she took care of us."

Jackson says Seward raised her almost her entire life and says she'll never forget this day.

"I will miss her dearly," said Jackson.

The condition of the residents that were rescued are unknown.

According to Iowa Fire Chief Sandy Miller, the fire started around 10 a.m., Miller said. The cause is under investigation but it is believed to be electrical. Miller was on the scene along with several other first responders.

One local fraternity made sure some families in Southwest Louisiana had a fully cooked meal to enjoy for Christmas. "We have turkeys and hams, but it's enough food in the box to feed a family of eight," said  Mark Gallashaw, president of Kappa Alpha Psi's Lake Charles Alumni Chapter. Thirty-five boxes of cooked meals are getting ready to be delivered to families across Southwest Louisiana.
