Jindal's administration then filed a counter suit arguing the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) improperly delegates constitutional authority to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).More >>

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Parents and education leaders that are suing Gov. Bobby Jindal on the Common Core standards testified in court Monday.

Judge Todd Hernandez is expected to make a written ruling on the issue in the next few days, which means the matter could be resolved by the end of the week.


The lawsuit stems from Jindal suspending the contract with the testing company. His lawyer says the governor acted within his rights. However, the group that filed suit believes Jindal overstepped his reach.


Teachers say they are confused as to what standard of instruction to use in the classroom.


"The governor has approved of Common Core for four years and then, all of a sudden, there's an about-face," said Bill Preis, the attorney for the plaintiffs. "So, without questioning the governor's motive, I want to think court will think about what governor said over four years before there was a sudden reversal."


"The documents I introduced, it's been introduced that Superintendent White, since intervention was filed, told everyone to sit tight," said Jimmy Faircloth, the attorney for the governor. "We're going to get your assessments. The test will come out. We will issue a plan to BESE by August 31. All of the talk of chaos and derailing wasn't proven."


The trial resumes Tuesday morning.

    We saw some showers and thunderstorms around the area early Monday but the bulk of the rain had come to an end shortly after lunch with clouds lingering throughout the day.  The clouds held temperatures down a few degrees, but still most areas reached the upper 80s.  It will be warm and muggy overnight with lows in the mid to upper 70s Tuesday morning.

    Four dogs have been rescued after authorities found them to be, what they call, extremely emaciated. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office first learned about the condition of the dogs when deputies were responding to a call for assistance in Vinton. The Calcasieu Parish Animal Services called CPSO when the residents of a home were being uncooperative.  Animal Services officers found 3 dogs locked in a kennel behind the home.
