CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) - For many students in Calcasieu Parish, their main form of transportation is walking to and from school.

"I know we're not the only school in the district that has a large population of walkers and I know we're not the only school set on a large busy road," said F.K. White Middle School Principal, Owen Clanton.

Those monitoring the roads said watching for kids is most important.

"People need to reduce their speed when they're going through a school zone, allow extra time to get to where they're going, and remember that kids do things we can't always anticipate," said Sgt. James Anderson.

There are also state laws regarding buses.

"When approaching a school bus whether it's from the front or the rear, a vehicle needs to stop no closer than 30 feet to that school bus and to yield the right away to all those children getting off the bus," said Anderson.
