CITGO helps local educator aboard exploration vessel; offers live streaming

SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) - Citgo along with the Ocean Exploration Trust program helped a McNeese State University educator to go aboard an exploration vessel as a part of the Nautilus Ambassadors program.

"It's been a great experience so far, I'm almost ready to be a captain myself," said Dr. Nikos Kiristis.

Kiristis, dean of the College of Engineering at McNeese and director of the Institute for Industry -- Education, was given the chance to go aboard the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, currently at sea in the Caribbean.

"Who better than to take a project like this and lead it and get students involved," said Janet Woolman, McNeese Louisiana Environmental Research center's executive director of economic development. "From design to communication, perhaps sociology and how it's used, it's really a great opportunity."

Even his students were at the projects launch event at Citgo Park in Sulphur and they said Kiristis has their full support.

"I was really excited to see our Dr. Kiristis there," said mechanical engineering student Pramesh Regmi. "Then, it opens doors for McNeese students like, he went there himself so, he'll see how it is and he'll give us his experience and we can really learn a lot."

Public Affairs coordinator of Citgo in Lake Charles Missy Amidon says she hopes the project will encourage other students to get involved.

"Just the little educational piece we showed prior to them going live helped everyone to have an understanding of what's going on," said Amidon. "Seeing them on the ship truly gave us a hands-on experience of what's going on over there. So, I think it's encouraging to our students here at McNeese to really engage in this program and this challenge."

Other McNeese students say projects like this are the start of something bigger and better.

"I hope that we can continue to do things like this," said chemical engineering student Hannah Fogg. "I hope to do other projects where we have the industry and McNeese and students all collaborate and work together and solve real problems and we get to see how the solutions help the community and other people."

The partnership is part of a year long series of Citgo programs to extend the company's efforts on environmental protection and restoration.

Few showers possible tomorrowFew showers possible tomorrow

By tonight, rain chances will stay low. We will have mostly clear skies late. Low temperatures will be in the low 70s. It will also feel muggy overnight, thanks to the humidity. There could be some areas of patchy fog in the early morning hours. Sunday will be another day with partly cloudy skies with very few showers popping up in the afternoon. Rain chances will remain at 20%, so that does not mean that we will not see any rain, just not very likely. Highs will be in the upper 80s.
