DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) -

A small dog in Livingston parish is back with its owner after being missing for a year and half. Baton Rouge area dog trainer Larry Benoit was on his way to a client's house when he noticed a black streak run across Greenwell Springs Road.

"I pulled over to see it and he came right to me," said Benoit.

Benoit took the dog and had him scanned. The scan revealed a microchip inside the dog which contained the dog's owner's information.

"I got a call from the company and they told me that my dog had been found and I told them that he had been missing for a year and half," said Marlana Roundtree, the dog's owner. "It took my breath away and I was shocked."

The dog, named Pi, had gotten out a year and half ago during an outbreak of storms. Roundtree searched for the dog for several months before giving up hope. She credits the dog's microchip implanted by the LSU School of Veterinarian Medicine.

"It's simple but the owners need to keep up with the registration and keep it updated," said Dr. Nancy Welborn, a veterinarian and assistant professor with LSU.

"It literally is like a shot for them and they tolerate it very well."

Microchips can also be implanted in cats.

"This is a testimony of how chips really do work and they worked in this case," Benoit said.
