VERNON PARISH, LA (KPLC) - State Troopers responded to a fatal, single-vehicle crash on La. 8 at Smith Lane at about 8:57 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to a preliminary investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop E, a 2007 Honda Accord was traveling at a high rate of speed on La. 8, heading east, when the vehicle drove off of the right side of the road and struck a group of trees, before rolling over and landing upside down.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 62-year-old Gaylon Bolton of Flatwoods, was not wearing his seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Excessive speed and lack of seat belt use are believed to be factors in this crash. Although impairment on Bolton's part is unknown, a routine toxicology test has been submitted for analysis.

The investigation remains ongoing.
