A Lafayette woman is being charged with negligent homicide, following an investigation by Lafayette Police into the death of her 3-year-old daughter on July 25.

According to investigators, the child had been transported to a hospital for treatment, but medical personnel informed police that the child had been dead for some time.

The child's mother, 27-year-old Sara Leblanc, told Lafayette Police that the child had been sick for a few days and had fallen asleep at about 6 a.m. that morning. Leblanc said she never left the home, but the child was not checked on between about 6 a.m. that morning and 7 p.m. that night.

According to an autopsy report, the cause of death for the child was hypothermia and dehydration. Investigators believe the child went about 25 hours without food or drink while she was sick.

Lafayette Police say that according to video surveillance footage, Leblanc did leave the child unattended and went to a fast food restaurant.

Leblanc was arrested on Tuesday by Lafayette Police. She is charged with negligent homicide.

The investigation remains ongoing.
